Where each DataSet 8 document went when the DOJ re-cut it, and why an EFTA number can point to two different documents
When the DOJ re-issues a dataset, it can re-stamp and re-cut the documents, so a given EFTA number does not always point to the same document over time. DataSet 8 is the clearest example: the DOJ replaced it with a version that renumbered nearly every document and reorganized which documents it contains. If you cite an EFTA number from an earlier copy or an archived link, it may now show something else on the DOJ site.
This page maps where each document from an earlier copy of DataSet 8 went. Documents are matched by content (the scanned page images plus text), which survives the re-stamping and the re-OCR, so the match holds even though the numbers changed. The comparison is between two physical copies of DataSet 8, an earlier "DOJ original copy" and the current DOJ replacement, cross-checked against the other datasets. These 35 documents from the earlier DataSet 8 do not appear in the current DataSet 8, but this is not evidence that they were removed from the disclosure. 34 of the 35 were located in another dataset. The text documents were matched by content (TF-IDF word similarity, robust to the different OCR of each scan), spot-checked by hand and corroborated by a strictly ordered block that moved into DataSet 11. The five photographs (crime-scene photos of the MCC jail cell, and a landscape) were matched by image and are byte-identical to copies in that same DataSet 11 block. The "Now in" links go to the matching document. Only one short email was not individually matched, and even its forwarded content (an "Opposition to Maxwell GJ Motion" filing) is present in the current DataSet 8 under other numbers. Nothing here has been shown to be absent from the whole corpus: a dataset re-cut is not a deletion.
