[5:07]Today we announced charges against Elaine Maxwell for helping Jeffrey Epstein
[5:13]sexually exploit and abuse
[5:16]multiple minor girls from the period of
[5:20]1994 through
[5:22]1997
[5:24]Maxwell has been taken into custody
[5:26]Early this morning in New Hampshire and will be presented this afternoon before a magistrate judge in the district of New Hampshire
[5:35]You'll recall
[5:38]That the indictment against Jeffrey and Epstein that we filed in July of 2019
[5:45]charged Epstein with sexual abuse of young girls from
[5:49]2002 through
[5:51]2005
[5:53]This case against Elaine Maxwell is the prequel to the earlier case that we brought
[6:00]Against Jeffrey Epstein as alleged
[6:05]starting in 1994
[6:08]until at least
[6:10]1997
[6:13]Maxwell had a personal and
[6:20]professional
[6:21]relationship
[6:23]Jeffrey Epstein
[6:48]Maxwell was among Epstein's closest associates and helped him exploit girls who were as young as
[6:57]14 years old
[7:00]Maxwell played a critical role in helping Epstein to identify a friend and groom
[7:06]minor victims for abuse in
[7:09]some cases Maxwell
[7:12]participated in the abuse herself as
[7:15]Alleged
[7:16]Maxwell and Epstein had a method
[7:18]Typically they would befriend these young girls by asking them questions
[7:24]About their lives pretending to be taking an interest in them
[7:29]They would take them to the movies and treat them to shopping trips
[7:34]Maxwell would encourage these young girls to accept offers from Epstein to pay for their travel and their education
[7:41]Making these young victims feel indebted to Jeffrey Epstein
[7:46]After developing a rapport with the victims
[7:49]Maxwell then tried to normalize sexual abuse with a minor victim through a process known as grooming
[7:57]for example
[7:59]Maxwell would discuss sexual topics with the victim and
[8:03]Undress in front of the victim or be present for sex acts involving the minor victims and Epstein
[8:12]Maxwell's presence as an adult woman helped put the victims at ease as
[8:17]Maxwell and Epstein intended this grooming process left the minor victims susceptible to sexual abuse
[8:26]That abuse included
[8:30]Sexualized massages during which the minor victim was fully or partially nude
[8:37]The sexualized massages developed into sexual encounters for which Maxwell in some instances was present and
[8:46]participated
[8:48]Maxwell and Epstein worked together
[8:50]To entice these minor victims to travel to Epstein's residences
[8:56]Depicted on the depicted on the other chart at the front of the room
[8:59]His residence in New York City on the Upper East Side as well as Palm Beach, Florida and Santa Fe, New Mexico
[9:09]Some of the acts of abuse also took place in Maxwell's residence in London, England in addition to allegedly
[9:20]Enabling and participating in the sexual abuse of young victims
[9:25]Maxwell compounded her crimes by repeatedly lying in 2016
[9:31]When she was questioned under oath and we have charged those lies in two perjury counts
[9:41]Maxwell lied because the truth as alleged
[9:46]Was almost unspeakable
[9:50]Maxwell enticed minor girls
[9:52]Got them to trust her then delivered them into the trap that she and Epstein had set for them
[10:00]She pretended to be a woman they could trust
[10:03]All the while she was setting them up to be sexually abused by Epstein and in some cases by Maxwell herself
[10:13]Today after many years
[10:15]Galen Maxwell finally stands charged
[10:19]For her role in these crimes
[10:22]These charges we announced today are the latest result of our investigation into Epstein and the people around him
[10:33]Who facilitated his abuse of minor victims that investigation remains ongoing?
[10:41]My office and the FBI remain committed to doing all within our ability to bring justice to individuals
[10:48]Who enabled facilitated and participated in the acts of abuse?
[10:55]Combating the exploitation of children is a priority of our office
[10:59]We are committed to pursuing and prosecuting those who exploit and abuse minors
[11:04]in case and in this case in every case and to that end I want to say to anyone who is watching or
[11:12]hears about this prosecution if

[13:02]Almost one year ago when our offices stood before you and announced the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein. I
[13:08]Stated that preserving the innocence of children is among the most important responsibilities. We carry as adults
[13:14]Too often adults in our society have turned a blind eye to the type of criminal behavior that we announced back then and
[13:21]Announce again today
[13:23]The villains in these outrageous crimes are the adult perpetrators
[13:27]Not the youth who are our neighbors our students vulnerable foster children and teens seeking support
[13:35]Today we announced the arrest of one of the villains in this investigation
[13:39]Early this morning. Elaine Maxwell was arrested in Bradford, New Hampshire
[13:43]By FBI special agents and NYPD detectives from the FBI NYPD crimes against children task force
[13:51]Our team from New York was assisted by special agents assigned to our Boston Newark New Haven and Albany field offices
[13:58]we've been discreetly keeping tabs on Maxwell's whereabouts as we work this investigation and
[14:03]More recently we learned she had slithered away to a gorgeous property in New Hampshire
[14:08]Continuing to live a life of privilege while her victims live with the trauma inflicted upon them years ago
[14:14]We moved when we were ready and miss Maxwell was arrested without incident
[14:20]Like Epstein miss Maxwell chose to blatantly disregard the law and her responsibilities an adult
[14:26]Using whatever means she had at her disposal to lure vulnerable youth into behavior
[14:31]They should never have been exposed and which creates lasting harm
[14:35]We alleged that from at least 1994 through at least 1997
[14:39]Miss Maxwell assisted Jeffrey Epstein's abuse of minor girls by helping to recruit
[14:45]entice
[14:46]Groom and abuse children under the age of 18
[14:49]She befriended the innocent
[14:52]Attempted to normalize sexual abuse and work to put victims at ease aware the entire time of the abuse that would follow
[14:59]One question about her conduct in 2016 we alleged miss Maxwell lied under oath I
[15:06]Like to take a moment again to speak directly to the victims
[15:09]There never was nor shall there be an excuse for the criminal behavior. You were subjected to
[15:14]We know that your quest for justice has been met with great disappointment and that reliving these events is traumatic
[15:20]When we met you we told you that in the eyes of the FBI you come first
[15:25]I would like to thank you for the trust you place in our investigative teams as we work to hold the adult perpetrators accountable
[15:33]For the many victims of other adult perpetrators who may be listening or get word of today's announcement
[15:39]The example set by the women involved in this investigation has been a powerful one
[15:44]They persevered against the rich and the connected and they did so without a badge a gun or a subpoena and they stood together

[17:20]Thank you for the opportunity to speak here today and I'll echo really their words in my view
[17:26]We were here for one reason today and one reason only
[17:28]for the victims for the survivors of these heinous crimes and
[17:32]I will remind everyone that although we are talking about periods of time 20 or close to 30 years in the past
[17:39]For the victims the survivors of these sexual assaults these crimes
[17:43]Are very fresh today and the impact that they caused on their psyche as they were then
[17:48]I want to take a special moment to thank
[17:50]Chief Rodney Harrison and the men and women of the New York City Police Department that worked on this case hand in hand with
[17:56]Bill Sweeney's special agents. Thank you. I'll take questions

[18:27]Bill Sweeney has given you a sense of that that she and I was being kept and
[18:34]Information was being collected and then the indictment was just recently voted and filed and that was when we were able and
[18:42]Prepared to move to arrest her. I'm not going to comment on anyone's status in this investigation
[19:03]But I will say that we would welcome
[19:05]Prince Andrew coming in to talk with us. We would like to have the benefit of the statement
[19:11]You know
[19:17]I have no further comment beyond what I just said which is that our doors remain open
[19:22]And we as we've previously said and we would welcome him coming in and giving us an opportunity to hear his statement
[19:29]We were working hard on this investigation this past year
[19:40]It's not easy to put together a case that goes back that far

[20:11]Audrey this morning in making the decision to charge you reach back to an era in the mid 90s
[20:17]Is there any physical evidence or is it merely the the word of the the women the unnamed victims that that are
[20:26]Again, I won't comment on beyond the scope of the indictment
[20:29]You can read the indictment and see the kind of
[20:33]Allegations we made and therefore the evidence that we will bring forward to prove those you can kind of figure out
[20:38]But I'm not going to comment on the specific evidence in the case that will be that will be seen in the event that she
[20:43]Goes to trial that I cannot speak to them
[20:56]You just see one indictment covers one period and the other covers the other and whatever is not said is not something I can
[21:02]Speak to it's beyond the full boundaries of the indictment
[21:05]Not at all. Not at all
[21:27]We will be we will be seeking detention
[21:30]And you know, we are sensitive to that concern and certainly will be in dialogue with the Bureau of Prisons about it
[21:45]This sometimes happens where there are perjury charges and people can go on from there and become
[21:51]Cooperators if that's what you're asking, so I'm not concerned about that in the event that she were to become a cooperator
